At Last

My closest friend in Alaska was named Marijke.  I’ve blogged about her before.
(Speaking of…did you know that she has a CD!!!!?????)
Long story short…she is good people.  I like her.  And we have had a lot of fun together.
When I decided to move back to Texas…I knew I would miss her.
But then….oh….it’s so exciting I can [...]

Newsflash

I’m going to miss the snow.
True story.

It’s Just So…Alaskan

I had dinner last night with a fellow Alaskan short-timer.  We talked for a brief moment about how different this place is.  And really…there was only one word we could find to describe this place.
It’s just so…Alaskan.
I mean…duh.
But it’s true.  This place is different.  Special.  Hard.  Cold.  And until you have been here, it’s so [...]

The Transformation of Me

I started this blog approximately two years ago to chronicle my move from Texas to Alaska.  At the time I appropriately titled it “Stop Looking at Me Like I’ve Lost My Mind…”, because when you tell your friends and family that you are moving from sunny DFW to Eagle River, Alaska…well…you get some funny looks.
The [...]

It was the best of times…

And yet…maybe the worst too?
I’m excited about moving to Texas.  I dream about it.  The thought of being closer to my family and friends again is quite exciting.
And then I look up.  And see the mountains.  And the ocean.  And I’m sad.

I’m choosing to leave this place.  Am I crazy?
And then…I think of my sister.  [...]

Idita-Almost-Forget

Waaaayyyyy back in March I volunteered at the Anchorage start of the 2009 Iditarod.  It was even more fun than I anticipated…and now I’m going to share a few pictures with you!
I didn’t take many pictures…b/c I WAS WORKING.  As part of the “trail guard” I stood at an intersection and shoveled snow, directed foot [...]

Another Good Idea

Do you remember my friend Marijke?  (aka the haver of super good ideas)
Well yesterday she suggested that we grab dinner after work and take a drive.  Smart girl.  Pretty day.  Lots of fun.
We drove (actually…she drove, I co-piloted) to Girdwood.  It was beautiful.  Warm (by Alaskan standards)… Beautiful.  Sunny.
It was breathtaking.  And the company…the company [...]

You know you are Alaskan when…

It gets above freezing and you turn on the AC in your car.
Seriously.  I did it yesterday.  It was 34 degrees.

Oh. My. Word.

If there were ever a good reason to blog three times in one day, this is it.
Prepare yourself.
I was out at lunch running errands and listening to the radio…
The radio DJ starts talking about Brian Dunkleman.  Do you know Brian Dunkleman?  He was the co-host (with R. Seacrest) for the first season of American Idol. [...]

True Story

I was talking to my nephew yesterday afternoon and he was showing me his school calendar.
“Aunt Beda, What is Ash Wednesday?”
(I try to give him a 9 year-old answer to that question.)
“Oh…I thought maybe that is when the volcano is going to erupt.”
Just in case you are wondering…Mt. Redoubt has yet to erupt.
